MCI suspends Dr Ketan Desai's medical licence

Dr Ketan Desai, the medical education mafia kingpin has had right to practice suspended by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
The board of governors of the MCI took the extreme step on Saturday, following the recommendations of its ethics committee.
Desai was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in April this year while accepting a Rs2-crore bribe from the management of a medical college in Punjab.
The council has decided to suspend Desai's licence and to bar him from practicing as a doctor and participating in national or international conferences as a doctor with immediate effect, according to a two-page order sent to Desai at his Ahmedabad residence.
The action came under the MCI's Professional Conduct Regulations of 2002. "In view of the serious and grave allegations against you having prima facie merit, permission granted to you to practise medicine has been suspended during the pendency of the complaint," the order said.
The action against Desai came on a complaint by US-based patient-rights activist Dr Kunal Saha who sought cancellation of Desai's license.
