Suresh Kalmadi, the disgraced former head of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee and president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on charges of irregularities in the award of contracts for the October 2010 Commonwealth Games, has been remanded to eight days police custody.
Kalmadi has also been sacked as president of the IOA. Senior vice president V K Malhotra has been appointed acting president of the IOA.
The IOA, which has so far been taking stock of the goings on, decided on the course of action on Suresh Kalmadi following his arrest on Monday.
Sports minister Ajay Maken had also threatened the sports body that the government would move in if the IOA failed to sack Kalmadi from the prestigious sports body.
Additional district judge Talwant Singh today ordered the 66-year-old Kalmadi to eight days police custody for further questioning.
The CBI arrested Kalmadi yesterday on charges of awarding illegal contracts to a Swiss firm for timing-scoring-result system for the games and causing a loss of Rs95 crore to the exchequer, besides other irregularities.
