New Delhi: British Airways (BA) has identified India as a 'voluminous route', and has hence listed it as its second largest market after the US, and third after Australia in terms of revenue.
Just two years ago, the airline used to fly 19 weekly services to Indian destinations. Now, it has 43 services from London's Heathrow to five Indian cities.
According to Robbie Baird, BA's area general manager for the Asia-Pacific region, India will be the biggest after the US in the long-haul market. With respect to revenues, India is the third largest, competing closely with Australia, which is in second place after the US. He says BA's plans are "to stay big here."
BA's policy has been to first consolidate and then expand on existing networks, which has seen double daily flights to London - Heathrow from Delhi and Mumbai, and a larger aircraft in the Boeing 747 being deployed on BA's services to Bangalore, in lieu of the earlier Boeing 777.
