BSNL cuts leased line Net port tariffs

29 Jan 2008

New Delhi: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has cut tariffs for leased line Internet ports by up to 33 per cent.

Leased line Internet ports are used mainly by companies, Internet service providers (ISPs) and IT-enabled service (ITES) companies to link various offices or clients.

Under the revised plans starting 1 February, a 45 Mbps leased line will be available to a non-ISP entity for Rs1.8 crore per annum. This is as compared to the Rs2.7 crore a non-ISP entity has to shell out presently. A one Mbps line will cost Rs4.25 lakh under the plan, down from Rs7.1 lakh at present.

ISPs will have to pay Rs5.1 lakh for a one Mbps line, a fraction of the Rs8.5 lakh they pay at present.

Though the tariffs remain unchanged for the 64 Kbps and 128 Kbps categories, BSNL has reduced tariffs for their 256 Kbps leased line to Rs2 lakh per annum, from the existing Rs2.7 lakh.

Promoting broadband with educational institutions, BSNL has decided to offer a 20 per cent discount for bandwidths under 2 Mpbs, and a discount of 40 per cent for leased lines over 2 Mbps.

Reportedly, competition from private players is behind the rate cut.
