Facebook overtakes Google's Orkut in traffic numbers

26 Aug 2010

According to new ComScore figures, Facebook now enjoys a traffic advantage over social network Orkut in India. Orkut is a Google-owned site, one of its long-lasting strongholds and a major target for Facebook.

Use of social networks in the country grew 43 per cent over the July 2009 to July 2010 period according to the figures.

With more than 33 million population aged more than 15 years using social-networking sites comprising 84 per cent of all internet users in the country, Traffic firm ComScore has found that given its 20.9 million users Facebook now holds a slight edge over Orkut which has 19.9 million users.

Facebook registered a growth of 179 per cent in India in the past year while Orkut grew 16 per cent.

What should however be factored into consideration is that ComScore numbers track only home and work internet use. It excludes mobile access and pubic computers at internet cafes or libraries.

Even as Facebook continues to make inroads into international markets- where much of the computing activity happens at mobile devices or at community connections, statistics about its growth would be less reliable if they are restricted as such.
