Facebook Inc said yesterday, hackers broke into some of its employees' laptops in recent weeks, making the largest social network in the world the latest victim in a series of cyber attacks, many of which had been traced to China.

It added, none of its users' data had been compromised in the attack that occurred following a handful of employees, last month, visiting a website that infected their machines, according to a post on Facebook's official blog.

"As soon as we discovered the presence of the malware, we remediated all infected machines, informed law enforcement, and began a significant investigation that continues to this day," Facebook said.

The reason for the delay in announcing the incident was not known. The social network declined to comment on the reason or the origin of the attack.

According to some security experts, the attack appeared to have originated in China.

According to analysts, the attack underscores the growing threat of cyber attacks aimed at a broad variety of targets.
