Google launches smart smartphone cases

21 May 2015

Google's new idea for the smartphone makes the smartphone case smarter.

The search engine has roped in artists to create a new line of cases for a number of Nexus and Samsung smartphones.

Google yesterday announced the first installment of the line called Editions that was designed by DJ Skrillex.

According to Kari Clark, senior manager of Google Accessories people spend a lot of time with their phones every day. The devices are essential to how we communicate and for many users, an extension of their style, according to thesilverkink.com.

She said the company thought that meant the users'  phone - and its accessories - deserved to be as interesting as they were, so Google decided to seek out some of the world's top artists to make that happen.

Each edition would be designed by a different well known artist, and the first edition was designed by Skrillex.

The case which is smarter can actually perform some smart tricks. The case connects users' phone and would automatically update the wallpaper on their screen.

During the day, the wallpaper would show pictures of Earth as depicted by the satellite, launched by the search company into the stratosphere for the project.

During night, the wallpaper would show constellations that were visible from users' location.

Google actually launched a high-altitude balloon named after Skrillex's dog Nanou to capture images of our planet and did not just take images from NASA.

Additionally, the cases are built with a shortcut button leading to the DJ's YouTube feed out of the box, however, it could be reprogrammed to launch the camera or any other specific app.

The Skrillex Editions cases can now be bought from Google Store for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
