Indians increase preference for laptops:IDC

New Delhi: The Indian personal computer (PC) market has crossed the 6.5 million shipment mark.

What is noteworthy, however, is that laptop sales have doubled to nearly 1.8 million units in 2007, according to IT research firm IDC India's India Quarterly PC Tracker, 4Q 2007, February 2008 release.

In a statement, IDC India country manager Kapil Dev Singh said, "The notebook PC shipments touching 1.8 million units reinforce the increasing acceptance of laptops as the preferred choice for large number first-time PC buyers."

In overall sales, combining PC and laptops, HP retained the top slot, with a market share of 21 per cent, followed by HCL at 13 per cent. Lenovo commanded a share of 10 per cent in terms of unit shipments.

IDC expects a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 20 per cent in personal computers till 2012. In terms of commercial desktop PC shipments, HCL led the market followed by HP and Lenovo.  In the total Notebook PC market, HP retained the top spot with a market share of 37 per cent, in calendar year 2007, in terms of unit shipments. Lenovo and Acer were at second and third spots with market shares of 16 per cent and 10 per cent respectively.
