ONGC reports “significant” gas find in Tripura

New Delhi:  State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) said it has made a significant gas discovery in the north-eastern state of Tripura. It, however, did not provide details of the reserves of its latest find.

According to a company release, gas well AD-30 ''…located on the northwest flank of Agartala Dome in Agartala licence of Assam-Arakan Basin was drilled to a depth of 3515 metres. On testing, one of its sand zone flowed gas at the rate of 113,400 cubic metres per day,'' the company said.

It also said the discovery had been notified to upstream regulator, the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH).

''The success of this well has opened up the intervening low area between Agartala and Konaban structures and also gives impetus to exploration of more such areas on the flanks of major structures in Tripura fold belt,'' ONGC said.

The Indian cabinet had approved a plan in January to set up a 100 megawatt gas-based power project in Tripura, and had sanctioned $134 million (Rs602 crore) for the project, which is expected to be commissioned by July 2013.

ONGC chairman and managing director, AK Hazarika said: ''This discovery will go a long way as far as our target of 5.5 million cubic metres per day of gas production for fuelling the ONGC Tripura Power Gas Co (OTPC) project is concerned.''
