28 Dec 2011

TVS Motor today announced the development of a new engine, which uses automatic transmission technology and could fit into both scooters and motorcycles.

The engine can be used for two-wheelers across platforms – be it scooter, motorcycle or step-thru, Harne Vinay Chandrakant, president, new product development at TVS Motor Company, said.

The new engine, called TVS Automatic Transmission engine, is also 20 per cent more fuel efficient in both scooters and motorcycles, he said.

The Chennai-based auto major today showcased its automatic transmission engines for a 110cc scooter and a motorcycle, both likely to come out in the second half of 2013.

The new technology will prove to be very cost-effective for the manufacturer too as thy do not have to create separate lines for scooter engines and motorcycle engines, he said.

''There will be a greater economy of scale, and that too with very minimal investment and changes in the existing manufacturing lines, we can start producing the new engines,'' said Chandrakant.
