US mobile phone maker Motorola Inc, which announced plans to cut as much as 3,000 jobs, or 5 per cent of its workforce worldwide, said the lay-offs will affect its India operations as well.

The company did not specify the number of Indian employees that will be hit by the decision as the lay-off would be implemented on the basis of a variety of factors for each market.

''At this time, there are no specifics,'' said Amit Chaudhery, communications and corporate affairs head of Motorola India Pvt Ltd.

Motrola India, meanwhile, has been redeploying several software engineers after Sanjay Jha, the company's co-chief executive, in August decided to focus on Google Inc's Android operating system.

The decision has left Motorola India with just two other software platforms to develop new phones. Motorola relies on more than half a dozen operating systems.

Motorola India, with its headquarters in Gurgaon and offices in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, has about 4,000 employees.

Industry sources said there are several software engineers, vice-presidents and directors of Motorola India in the market looking for jobs. About 400-500 people have become redundant in Motorola, but many of them are being redeployed internally, they say.

The developments comes a day after reports that American Express India is likely to cut 120-150 jobs from its finance and accounting back-office operation in India.
