A tsunami warning across the Indian Ocean has been lifted hours after the twin quakes of 8.7 and 8.2 magnitudes that hit Indonesia's Sumatra island failed to stir the oceans as expected.

Small tsunami waves of around one metre hit the western coast of Sumatra and a aftershock measuring 8.2 on the Rechiter scale was felt in the area.

The country's disaster management agency, however, said it was still assessing damage caused by the tremors.

Residents in coastal cities across the region are still holding on to the high grounds they occupied in the wake of the tremors and the tsunami warning.

Just four hours after the first quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii lifted the tsunami watch for most areas of the Indian Ocean except Indonesia, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka and the island of Diego Garcia.

No major damage from the tremors or tsunami waves were reported from anywhere in the region so far.
