Get ready to be floored with foldable mobiles
02 Apr 2018
Foldable devices including mobile phones are going to be the next big innovation likely to sweep across the globe over the coming months.
And mobile phone makers including Huawei, Samsung and Apple are working furiously to launch devices that can fold and act both as a phone and a tablet.
The tech world is abuzz with talk of Huawei, the Chinese major, introducing its phone with two displays this year itself. The foldable phone will virtually do away with the concept of tablets, as the new device will combine both the voice and data gadgets.
The company has won the patent for a foldable phone from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO); the gadget will have two displays, will fold from the middle and one will work as a tablet.
And the world’s two largest smartphone makers (Samsung and Apple, with Huawei being the third one) are also working furiously at introducing their new devices. However, Apple’s foldable device is likely to be launched only around 2020, it is learnt.
There is talk that Samsung, fast catching up on Apple in terms of volumes and technology, might introduce its foldable phone — speculated to be Galaxy X — this year itself.
The other South Korean major, LG, has also filed a patent with the WIPO for a hybrid phone and tablet device.
