Edingburgh-based law firm McGrigor to merge with Irish firm

29 Aug 2009

Leading Northern Ireland law firm L'Estrange & Brett and Edinburgh-based firm McGrigors are set to merge in a deal that will not involve any job losses, but the L'Estrange & Brett name will be dropped.

The staff in McGrigors' Belfast office will shift to L'Estrange & Brett's offices in Bridge Street.

According to Brian Henderson, senior partner at L'Estrange & Brett, the deal would allow the company to offer a greater array of services.

He added that there was a note of sadness at the passing of the L'Estrange & Brett name which has a 150-year-old history. He, however, said that the McGrigor name was a nationally known brand whereas the L'Estrange & Brett name is primarily known in Northern Ireland.

The merged firm will employ 100 people including 40 lawyers.

Richard Masters, managing partner at McGrigors, said the company had a long-standing commitment to the Northern Ireland market, having opened its own office in Belfast in 2000.
