Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz announces resignation on Twitter

04 Feb 2010

Jonathan Schwartz, the pony-tailed chief executive of Sun Microsystems, has become the first CEO of a Fortune 200 Company to announce his resignationby tweeting it on Twitter.

As CEO of Sun, Schwartz was known as one of the few blogging CEOs. Now he has tweeted resignation, embellishing it using Haiku, a Japanese poetic form, which uses three lines of up to 17 syllables and uses a punctuation mark.

Here's his tweet: "Today's my last day at Sun. I'll miss it. Seems only fitting to end on a #haiku. Financial crisis / Stalled too many customers / CEO no more."

Schwartz, who regularly promotes his view through blogging and one of the few CEO's to have his own blog, wrote in his blog post last week, ''Greg Papadopoulos, one of the brightest people I've ever known, once made a very interesting statement - all technology ultimately becomes a fashion item. It was true for timekeeping, and it's definitely true of computing and telecommunications. To that law, I'd like to add a simple corollary: the technology industry only gets more interesting. It's been true my entire life.''

Schwartz was expected to resign after Oracle Corporation finally won unconditional approval late last month from the European Commission for its $7.4-billion acquisition of Sun Microsystems after a 10-month stand-off. (See: Oracle finally gets the EC nod for Sun Microsystems acquisition)

Schwartz, who is part Indian and part Welsh from his mother's side and part Hungarian and part Russian from his father's, had said what he would do next in his bogpost titled, ''Where Life Takes Me Next...''

''As for where life takes me next, you should follow me via Twitter at openjonathan  to find out. I'll also be rehosting this blog (and again, stay tuned to Twitter by following me). I expect to do my part to keep things interesting.''
