Idea Cellular sees 3G users tripling by March

GSM operator Idea Cellular expects the number of its third generation (3G) service users to triple by the end of March, after it slashed 3G internet browsing prices by up to 70 per cent last month.
''We expect the slash in prices to increase the adoption of 3G network services,'' Idea Cellular chief marketing officer Sashi Shankar said, adding, the company expects it to triple by the end of the this financial year.
Idea had 2.9 million subscribers using 3G services on 31 May 2012, almost one-third of the total 9 million 3G users in the country.
In May, the company had reduced the prices for its prepaid and on-contract customers to Rs0.03 per 10 kilobytes of data usage from Rs0.10 earlier.
Separately, the Aditya Birla Group company, which is India's fourth-largest operator by subscribers, a new dual-SIM Android smartphone on 3G priced at Rs5,994.
The Idea ID 918, made by Alcatel in China, runs on Android 2.3 and has a 3.2-inch touchscreen display.
