17 Apr 2006
Chennai: Twelve labs of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam have got ISO 9001:2000 certification from BVQI. This is also the first time a research centre under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has received the prestigious ISO certification for its labs.
The IGCAR labs carry out research in: mechanical metallurgy, materials technology, non-destructive evaluation, corrosion science and technology, physical metallurgy, design and development of electronic instrumentation and control systems, management of computing and data communication facilities, quality assurance, structural mechanics, chemical characterisation, radiological safety and reactor safety engineering.
Incidentally it was the IGCAR, which had developed the country's first fast-breeder reactor A 500mw fast-breeder reactor plant is being built at Kalpakkam.
According to Dr Baldev Raj, director, IGCAR, the centre would consistently endeavour to achieve world leadership in multi-disciplinary scientific and engineering research and development activities in the areas of fast-breeder reactor and the associated fuel cycle technologies.
The 12 labs received their certification within 12 months. Two years ago, the reactor-engineering group obtained the ISO certification for design and engineering of fast-breeder reactor for power generation applications, said Dr S L Mannan, director, metallurgy and materials group and chairman, management review committee.
In addition the labs at the DAE hospital have also received ISO certification.
