The pumping system project will benefit 30 million people in the 1.8-million hectares of the arid Saurashtra region by supplying them with drinking water in the first phase, followed by irrigation water in the second phase.
KBL will set up a series of pumping stations to lift water from the Sarovar canal to these parched lands.
The five pumping stations will be located at Dhanki, Lakhtar, Bala, Rajpur and Dudhrej in Gujarat. For KBL, which had a turnover of Rs 4,457 millions in 2000-01, it is another feather in its cap. It outsmarted international bidders like Alsthom and the Russia-based Power Corporation that bid for the project.
