Mercedes Benz is mulling development of a small car for the booming Indian market according to a senior company executive.
However, the company has not yet decided to any timeframe to translate the idea into a concrete plan, the executive said.
"We can develop our own (small) car for India in future," Mercedes Benz India's chief financial officer and management board member Uwe Jarosch said. He further said that the development would require a huge investment and needed to be backed up volumes.
"If we are investing euro 1 billion on development of the car, then definitely (we) want huge volumes to justify it," he said.
The work on the project would likely be taken up at the company's R&D centre in Bangalore that supports company's headquarters in Germany. The company also has plans to double the workforce from 600 by next year according to Jarosch.
The company will also set up brand centres with investment from its existing dealers showcasing around 20 odd models.
