Mumbai: The Indian Institutes of Technology, the country's premier technology institutes, are likely to see a hike in tuition fee beginning this year, similar to the fee hike announced by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) recently.
Replying to questions in the Rajya Sabha, human resource development minister Arjun Singh said the IITs had also proposed to increase their fee on the lines of IIMs. He, however, did not reveal the quantum of fee hike the IITs are considering or when a decision would be taken.
"The standing committee of IIT council (SCIC) has recommended an increase in tuition fee for B.Tech and M.Tech courses," the minister said.
Minister of state for human resource development Daggubati Purandareswari, meanwhile, said there was no proposal before the government to set up an independent regulatory authority for higher education.
"This requires wide consultations with various ministries and departments involved. No consensus has been reached as yet (on the issue)," she said, adding the regulator would not be set up unless a consensus was reached.
The National Board of Accreditation under the AICTE and National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of the UGC review course curriculum and facilities at institutes before giving accreditation, she said.
Based on the recommendations made by the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (SAC-PM), it has been decided to set up three new Indian institutes of Technology (IITs), one each in the States of Rajasthan, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh during eleventh plan, she said.
In order to expand the facilities for high quality management education in the North East, the government has decided to establish an Indian Institute of Management (IIM), at Shillong, she said.
After considering requests of the state governments and other relevant factors such as existing regional distribution of central educational institutions in the country, it has been decided to locate five more IITs and six more IIMs in the following states:-
- IITs: Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab.
- IIMs: Tamil Nadu, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Haryana.
It has also been decided that no new IIT and IIM will be established in the same state, Purandeswari said in reply to a question in Rajya Sabha.
