Reliance Globalcom, the submarine cable unit of Reliance Communications, plans to upgrade its Flag Europe-Asia sub-sea network to 100 GB from present 40 GB.
The Anil Ambani group company is buying U.S.-based network specialist Ciena Corp's transmission solutions for the upgradation.
Nasdaq-listed Ciena will offer its WaveLogic coherent optical 100 GB networking solutions, which is based on dense wave division multiplexing technology (a high-end optical technology), to Reliance Globalcom.
"Ciena's proven optical technology gives us the ability to upgrade our existing submarine networks from 10G to 40G and 100G rates and beyond, so that we can keep pace with our customers' changing bandwidth requirements while leveraging our investments in fibre assets," said Reliance Globalcom president & CEO Punit Garg.
Reliance Globalcom is already using Ciena's 100G solutions to power its European network.
