Apple is "re-launching" its two-year-old iPhone at a price of Rs19,990 in India, a move said to be a bid to counter cheap Android smartphones that have flooded the market recently, cellphone dealers have said.
The version of iPhone on offer at the price would have 8GB internal storage.
According to a mobile industry insider, shops had already received stocks and the phone would be available from today at the said price. It is being offered with a one-year official warranty.
A number of dealers in Delhi, have said they had received stocks of iPhone 3GS (8GB) on Thursday evening.
iPhone 3GS first released in June 2009, has a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen (320 x 480 pixels) and is powered by a 600Mhz processor.
According to experts, what makes the iPhone 3GS a worthy rival to similarly-priced Android devices with better hardware is the latest Apple iOS version 4.3. According to Apple, iOS 5 would also work on iPhone 3GS though it is likely that not some features might not be supported.
Analysts say at Rs19,990, iPhone 3GS would directly take on Samsung Nexus S, a phone that saw its price fall by over Rs6,000 to touch Rs19,999 a few weeks ago. Nexus S, runs on Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread, and has a 4-inch capacitive screen. Powered by a 1Ghz processor, it packs 512MB RAM and comes with 16GB internal storage.
