Apple sells record 3 million new iPad tablet computers
20 Mar 2012
Apple announced yesterday that it had sold 3 million of its new iPad tablet computers over the course of its first weekend on the market.
The iPad sales figure was Apple's second major announcement today. Earlier it announced it would introduce dividends and begin a buyback of $10 billion worth of shares (See: Apple to reward investors with dividends, stock buybacks).
Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller said the new iPad was a blockbuster with 3 million sold - the strongest iPad launch yet.
He said customers were loving the incredible new features of iPad... and they could not wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world by this Friday.
The new iPad went on sale on Friday as Apple fans lined up from Sydney to San Francisco to get the latest model of the hot-selling tablet computer.
The new iPad is available in Australia, the US, France, Canada, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, Britain and Hong Kong. The iPad would be on sale in another two dozen countries on 23 March.
