BMW recalls 350,800 cars including Rolls-Royce Phantoms
01 Oct 2010
German car maker, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, better known the world over as BMW, has joined the long list of auto manufacturers recalling vehicles globally when it issued a recall for 350,800 BMW and Rolls-Royce vehicles yesterday because of power brake problems.
The recall covers BMW's V8 and V12 engine cars in the 5 series, 6 series and 7 series, as well as Rolls-Royce Phantoms made from 2003 to 2010. Rolls-Royce is a subsidiary of BMW.
Of the global recall, 11,427 cars, including Rolls-Royces, are from the UK, and 198,000 from the US.
BMW said that there is a possibility that a leak may develop in the power braking system, which in turn could potentially cause a vacuum loss leading to reduction of power braking ability.
However, the Munich-based car maker said that mechanical braking is still an option that is available to slow and stop the vehicle.
BMW said that it will notify owners of the recalled vehicles and parts will be replaced by dealers. It advised owners of BMW vehicles who lose braking power to immediately seek a service appointment to rectify the problem.
The recall comes a day after the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it was investigating a power steering problem with BMW's Mini brand.
The recall comes after most automobile manufacturers have been besieged with quality control issues and forced to recall their vehicles-mainly in the North American market.
