27 Jan 2015
Facebook appeared to be down early today, as the social media site said it was working to fix the issue. The company's photo sharing website Instagram too was down as users experienced issues logging in.
The social network said on its website, "Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can.''
Users from the US and India reported inability to log on to the website.
Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reported that complaints about the outage surfaced after 1 am, today, with services restored around 2 am.
A Facebook spokesperson denied the situation was the result of a third-party attack, attributing it instead to a change that affected configuration systems.
Twitter was awash with comments with #Facebookdown becoming a worldwide trending topic. Some people wrote about their hopes for a Facebook-free world.
Some acknowledged the dependability of traditional books while others tried to survive without Facebook.
Reports were also received about outages across platforms such as Tinder, AIM and HipChat today.
