India's largest scooter maker Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) today said it it expects its bike sales to overtake sales of its scooters in the country in the next fiscal.
HMSI sold 12.7 lakh units of two-wheelers in 2009-10, with sales projected at over 15 lakh units in the current fiscal. Bike sales are expected to contribute around 50 per cent to the figure.
"The market of motorcycles (in India) is much bigger than scooters'. In 2011-12, our motorcycle sales will exceed that of scooters," Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) president and CEO Shinji Aoyama told reporters in New Delhi.
In the last fiscal, HMSI's motorcycle sales stood at 5.2 lakh units while scooters sales clocked 7.5 lakh units.
"This fiscal the break-up will be equal," he added.
According to Aoyama apart from existing models, new launches will spur growth in the motorcycle segment. The company has five bike models in the 100cc to 150cc segments in India.
