NTPC to build 1,000 MW renewable energy capacity by 2014

National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC) is planning to set up renewable capacity of 1000 MW by 2014.
Taking the first step forward in the direction, the public sector giant has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government-run Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd (GPCL) for putting up solar and wind power plants to generate 500 MW in Gujarat.
"NTPC aims to have 1,000 MW renewable power generation capacity. The company intends to set up solar, wind and geothermal power projects," said R S Sharma, CMD, NTPC after MoU signing ceremony in Gandhinagar. The capacity addition would likely happen by 2014.
Apart from Gujarat, NTPC is also exploring opportunities in Karnataka and Rajasthan for similar renewable projects. Sharma said NTPC might even increase its renewable power project capacity to more than 1000 MW.
As per the MoU, NTPC will execute 100 MW solar and 400 MW wind power projects in the state. According to Bharatsingh Solanki, NTPC will pump in Rs4,000 crore for the 500 MW renewable power capacity. Initially however, the company would establish a 50 MW solar power project at Morwada in Banaskantha district at an investment of Rs500 crore.
The first 50 MW solar power plant is slated for commissioning within 30 months. Additionally it is also looking for suitable sites in Banaskantha, Patan and Kutch districts of the state for land acquisition.
