'Jobs at Wipro' scam busted
06 Jul 2011
A job racket in which 37 unemployed youth were tricked into paying Rs1.8 lakh each to a HR consultancy firm after being given to believe that they had landed lucrative jobs at IT firm, Wipro Ltd, was busted with the arrest of four persons.
According to Bangalore commissioner of police Jyothi Prakash Mirji, Wipro employees were not involved in the racket in any way.
The investigation which was launched following a complaint by the technology firm found that the con artistes used a placement agency called Lotus Consultancy, headed by a woman from Coimbatore, Sathyapriya, to lure youths to fake job interviews on behalf of Wipro.
Aspirants were deceived into parting with their money for jobs in the IT firm through an elaborate plan whereby they were sent to meet the mastermind of the racket, Rajiv Ranjan, a native of Patna, on Wipro's main campus at Bangalore.
Ranjan (30) gained entry into Wipro's main campus in Bangalore using a valid vendor pass while the 'candidates' were reportedly let into the campus with guest passes available to vendors. Posing as the company's managing director, Ranjan conducted interviews in a guest room on the campus from where he made the fake job offers.
The victims later came to know they had been conned when they approached the company with the offer letters.
