Salad mix recalled after dead bat found
10 Apr 2017
Walmart and Fresh Express have recalled the Organic Marketside Spring Mix brand of salad after consumers in Florida reported after eating their salad, that it contained parts of a dead bat.
Fresh Express said in a circumspect manner, the recall was prompted when they were ''notified that extraneous animal matter was allegedly found in a single container of the salad'' adding that all salads from the same production run had been recalled, ''out of an abundance of caution.''
The CDC said in a more direct statement, ''Two people in Florida reported eating some of the salad before the bat was found. The bat was sent to the CDC rabies lab for laboratory testing because bats in the United States sometimes have been found to have this disease. The deteriorated condition of the bat did not allow for CDC to definitively rule out whether this bat had rabies.''
''On April 8, 2017, Fresh Express issued a recall of a limited number of cases of Organic Marketside Spring Mix. The salad was distributed to Walmart stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. ''All remaining packages of salad from the same lot have been removed from all store locations where the salad was sold.''
The recalled salads were distributed only to Walmart stores located in the Southeastern region of the United States.
