Consumer price inflation for industrial workers up at 10.68% in May

Consumer price inflation for industrial workers based on the consumer price index for industrial workers (CPI-IW) stood higher at 10.68 per cent in May 2013 compared with 10.24 per cent in the previous month and 10.16 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year.
Similarly, consumer price inflation based on food prices also stood higher at 13.24 per cent in May 2013 against 12.39 per cent in the previous month and 10.61 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year.
The all-India consumer price index for industrial workers (CPI-IW) rose by 2 points to 228 in May 2013, an increase of 0.88 per cent from the previous month and a 0.49 per cent increase from the year-ago period.
The largest contribution to the upward movement in the index came from the food group, which increased by 1.22 per cent, contributing 1.64 percentage points to the total change.
At the item level, rice, arhar dal, fish, poultry (chicken), milk, green chillies, garlic, ginger, tomato, tubers and green vegetables, tea leaf, readymade tea, cigarette, country liquor, electricity charges, medicine (allopathic), repair charges, etc contributed most to the rise in the index. This, however, was moderated by a small decline in petrol prices.
At the level of individual centred, Chennai and Nagpur recorded the largest increase of 8 points each, followed by Nasik (7 points) and Warrangal, Coonoor, Hubli Dharwar, Madurai and Tripura (6 points each).
Among others, 2 centres recorded increases of 5 points each, 14 centres recorded increases of 4 points each, 6 centres recorded increases of 3 points each, 12 centres saw increases of 2 points each and 12 centres reported increases of 1 point each.
On the contrary, Delhi reported a decline of 6 points, Ghaziabad registered a decline of 5 points and Srinagar reported a 4 points fall while 2 centres reported declines of 3 points each, 2 other centres a decline of 2 points each and 7 centres reported declines of 1 point each.
The indices remained stationary for the remaining 10 centres.
The indices of 38 centres were above the all-India Index and in other 38 centres the indices were below national average. The index of Jabalpur and Haldia centres remained at par with all-India index.
