Consumer price inflation in the country based on the consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.18 per cent month-on-month in August as food and clothing became more expensive compared to the previous month.
The numbers, however, are based on preliminary estimates of retail prices and it may change after final data becomes available.
The CPI (with base 2010=100) based on retail prices stood at 111.7 points in August, against 110.4 points in the previous month, data released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) showed.
The all-India index for the 'food, beverages and tobacco' group rose 1.27 per cent to 111.7 points in August from 110.3 points in the previous month.
Effective January 2011, the CSO has introduced a new series of consumer price indices (CPI) for all-India and states/UTs separately for rural, urban and combined.
The annual inflation rates would be available at the time of release of indices for January 2012, when the indices for one year will be available, CSO said.
The general indices for rural, urban and combined stood at 113.1, 109.8 and 111.7, respectively.
