The ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) yesterday vowed to vigourously promote political restructuring and said steps would be initiated to improve living standards across the country.
The decisions were taken at a CPC central committee meeting to set out the development agenda for the country in the next five years (2011-2015), according to Xinhua.
The central committee also approved the appointment of vice president Xi Jinping, 57, as vice chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission, a move seen to anoint Xi as Hu Jintao's most likely successor when he retires are party leader in 2012.
According to the CPC, China would continue to open wider to the outside world and accelerate the 'going global' strategy.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the four-day meeting the central committee declared that reform was a 'powerful driving force' for accelerating the transformation of the economic development mode.
The comminuque added that great impetus would need to be given to economic restructuring, while continuing vigorous yet steady efforts needed to hasten the promotion of cultural and social reforms.
