Banks in India, including state-run and private sector, have generated 55.2 million deposits under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) and raised total deposits of Rs4,268 crore as of 7 October 2014.

This was revealed at a review meeting by the mission director with the executive directors and other senior officers of public sector banks and major private sector banks on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by representatives of National Payments Corporation of India, Indian Banks Association, UIDAI and Industry representatives (SCAFI).

The review meeting emphasised the early issue of RuPay debit cards, e-KYC based account opening, Aadhaar seeding and the progress in survey made in the rural as well as urban areas.

As of 7th October, 55.2 million accounts have been opened and a deposit of Rs4,268 crore have been mobilised under PMJDY so far.

The union territories of Chandigarh, Puducherry and three districts of Gujarat - Porbandar, Mehsana and Gandhi Nagar - have reported opening of at least one bank account of all households, thereby making these areas fully saturated in PMJDY.

The review meeting emphasised the setting up of banking facilities through the Bank Mitras as envisaged in PMJDY. Senior officials were asked to visit the field locations, carry out physical verification of the Bank Mitras.

Banks have also been asked to ensure that the Banks Mitrs have proper visibility, uniforms, Aadhaar-enabled machines and proper signage board indicating the availability of banking facilities under PMJDY. The survey work was found to be satisfactory except in the states of Maharashtra and Haryana where this has been stopped in view of the assembly elections.

All banks were also asked to ensure ground level publicity, including wall painting and other relevant media, to disseminate the message of PMJDY.
