The government has incorporated New Space India Limited (NSIL) as a central public sector enterprise (CPSE) to commercially exploit the research and development work of Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) centres and constituent units of the Department of Space (DoS).
Incorporated on 6 March 2019, NSIL is a wholly owned central government undertaking under the administrative control of the Department of Space, minister of state for development of North-Eastern Region, MoS PMO, personnel, public grievances and pensions, atomic energy and space, Jitendra Singh informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
NSIL functions involve among others, technology transfer for small satellites to industry, wherein NSIL will obtain license from DoS/Isro and sub-license it to industries.
It also plans to involve private sector in the manufacture of small satellite launch vehicles as also in the production of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
NSIL would also engage Indian industry in production and marketing of space based products and services, including launch and application. Private sector would also be involved in marketing spin-off technologies and products/services, both in India and abroad..
The new company will transfer of technology developed by Isro centres and constituent units of DoS.
Through NSIL, the government hopes to enable Indian industries to scale up high-technology manufacturing and production base for meeting the growing needs of Indian space programme and would further spur the growth of Indian Industries in the space sector.
