Eminent cardiac surgeon M S Valiathan reappointed national research professor

M S Valiathan, an eminent cardiac surgeon, teacher and researcher, has been appointed National Research Professor for a second five-year term beginning 1 January 2011.
Valiathan was appointed national professor on 1 January 2006, through a notification by the ministry of human resource development, which came later.
"After being so appointed, Prof Valiathan has continued to work in the field of medicine and is currently engaged in developing the field of 'Ayurvedic Biology'.
He is continuing to lecture, publish and research. His work in synthesising Ayurveda with modern medicine has been commended by the scientific advisory committee," an official press release said today.
Therefore, in consideration of the continual work done by Prof Valiathan, he has been appointed as National Research Professor for a second term of five years with effect from 1 January 2011, the release added.
As national research professor, Valiathan is entitled to an honorarium of Rs75,000 per month in accordance with the existing terms and conditions under the Scheme of National Research Professorship (1949).
