Consumer price inflation hits double digit at 10.03 per cent in August

Consumer price inflation based on the all-India general consumer price index (CPI) rose to 10.03 per cent in August 2012, from 9.86 per cent in July 2012, amidst rising prices of vegetables and other essential commodities.

The corresponding inflation rates for rural and urban areas stood at 9.90 per cent and 10.19 per cent, respectively, in August 2012, provisional figures released by the Central Statistical Office (CSO) showed.

Against this, consumer price inflation rates (final) for rural and urban areas in July 2012 were lower at 9.76 per cent and 10.10 per cent, respectively.

The general indices (Base 2010=100) of consumer prices for rural, urban and combined for August 2012 stood at 124.3, 121.1 and 122.9, respectively.

The spike was due mainly to soaring prices of vegetables, which recorded an increase of 20.79 per cent during the month.

Retail prices of food and beverages also increased by 12.03 per cent. Prices of clothing, bedding and footwear rose 10.71 per cent while fuel and light costs rose 7.55 per cent in August 2012.
